Extremity #5 Review

Unsurprisingly, Image have just announced that Extremity's first 6 issues will be collected into a trade paperback, due to be released in September. I cannot wait to have this series as a part of my collection. Every issue has been great and I cannot wait to see what Daniel Warren Johnson has in store for us in the future!

With that being said, I'm sure you can take a wild guess at what my thoughts are on #5!

Yep, that's right!  Once again I loved it! This world fascinates me. These characters fascinate me! This issue has more of the series' almost trademarked tragedy. It breaks my heart to see what all of this revenge and violence is doing to not only a family but also to the whole Roto tribe. Rollo has been cast out. So now he is spending his time talking to the shell of Shiloh (who recently sacrificed himself and will be greatly missed!). Meanwhile, Thea has followed her father’s every order in their war against the Paznina. But how far is she willing to let him push her?

Johnson crafts this book so beautifully. He could easily take this issue and accelerate through the story but instead he takes time to remind us what life use to be like for these characters. Wonderfully rendered flashbacks provide us with snapshots of a simpler life, before death and destruction took over their lives. This makes every bad decision impact the reader even more! And with Johnson at the helm this doesn't let the pace falter either!

The writing has been brilliant but it also needs to be pointed out that Johnson is also brilliant on art (because yes he is in charge of both story and art!). The design of this world is magnificent. If it weren't for the constant wars and feuds, it seems like it would a fascinating world to live in. Their technology is very cool. It seems like it should not fit in to a fantasy-style viking world such as this, but it really works! And with Mike Spicer doing the colors, the blood really pops on the page!

Of course Spicer he does much more than just colour the blood red. I believe that he is very important to creating the unique style of this book. He truly compliments and heightens Johnsons art.

The art alone is enough reason to buy this book. However, so is the story! So how lucky are we that we get such high quality of both in one book? Extremity #5 gets an A for both story and art yet again!
