Nightwing: The New Order #1

Nightwing: The New Order #1

Nightwing: The New Order is similar to Marvel's Secret Empire event. However, it is not set within the ongoing continuity and therefore DC fans cannot get as angry as Captain America fans have been. The similarities are that our beloved hero has seemingly betrayed the rest of the superhero community and has now taken an extremely powerful position in society.

However, The New Order is not a blatant rip-off, it's doing its own thing. I really enjoyed this first issue. The world building here is very impressive. You don't really need to have read too many other comics to get what is going on. The narration and the story itself drip feeds you all of the relevant information as the plot progresses, very little outside knowledge is required. So I would recommend it to even those who are not that interested in the character. If it isn't obvious enough, this is a very different take on Nightwing. He could usually be classified as everyone's bebst friend, one of the nicest guys in the DC universe and this comic itself even refers to how he used to be like his. But things are different now. I'm not happy with the decisions that he has made but I am willing to follow this journey because I really like the scenario (that I will NOT spoil) that has been set up here.

The book caught me surprise with several emotional jabs. It was really nice to read a conversation between two particular characters and for it to be handled so well. The dialogue is perfect.

Also bonus points to writer Higgins for incorporating a Saga-style narration as a plot device. By that I mean the all-knowing narrator will conceal and reveal information until it is relevant or integral to the plot, all from a point in the future of this story. I always enjoy it in Saga and it is employed to great effect here as well!

I'm giving this debut issue and A! I'm very intrigued to see what happens next and I also feel that six issues is perfect for a story like this. However, if it continues at this quality maybe there will be demand for a sequel series, returning to this world.
