Doctor Strange #390 // Review

Written by Donny Cates with art by Frazer Irving

This issue of Doctor Strange is probably the weakest of the run, which is a shame because it’s also Donny Cates last issue as well. The worst part is that the art is very inconsistent and downright awful sometimes which is also a shame because the art on this run has been fabulous so far.

Most the issue is Spider-man having interactions with Strange,Bats, and Zelma; which is all really good but almost makes the issue feel as much Spider-mans as it does Stranges. But seeing Bats fanboy over Spidey was really fun and Spidey brings some sound advice to Strange on giving up and moving past having given up. Cates claims Spider-man to be his favorite comic character and you really feel that in this issue, he gets Spider-man so well and really make you wish he was writing some Spidey himself. The issue ends on somewhat of a down note which sucks because this run has really kicked Strange in the balls this whole time and it would have been nice for him to get a happy ending but this ending does fit the tone of this run better.

Irvings art is downright awful at times and even at best is only mediocre, and it really brings this issue down a lot. His facial expressions are some of the worst I’ve ever see. But on that note we do get a fun mini comic by Cates and Chip Zdarsky which is cute and wonderful and also makes this comic a little more bearable to look at. I’m gonna have to give this issue of Doctor Strange a C because no matter how good the writing is the artwork just don’t cut it.
