In a change of pace, Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad hijack this issue for a meta trip through the world of Doom Patrol. Taking on writing and pencil duties, Cloonan doesn't skip to beat to make this issue another unforgettable entry into this brand new run. With a more episodical approach, each chapter stands on its own while still carrying a through-line tying them together. A lighter take on the series as a whole and an excellent first issue for new readers.

As a boy named Clark uses old Doom Patrol trade paperbacks as an approximation for a Magic 8 ball, the young animal finds himself within the pages of his favorite comic and face to face with a long lost member of the team, or so he thinks. A dream come true for most readers, Clark takes the liberty of adding himself to the team's ranks as well as sporting a new codename, Merlin. With his knowledge of past, present, and future, Clark helps Robotman come to grips with loss and face down an old foe before heading back home.

Becky Cloonan brings the joys of fandom to life with this fun meta romp through the pages of Doom Patrol. Her cartooning fits the series and chapter perfectly, the loose ink aesthetic delivers the sheer fun for this chapter in full force. Tamra Bonvillain brings the whole look to life with her vibrant color palette to accent Cloonan's artwork exceptionally well. Albeit a complete team change up, this chapter fits perfectly with the current run and manages to make light of a serious situation. While Cloonan wears the majority of the hats this time around, Michael Conrad aids with writing duties and helps to bring the love to this heartwarming chapter. The two creatives merge into one voice and work together to deliver an absolutely unforgettable chapter with the aid of Tamra Bonvillain.

A complete breath of fresh air for the comic market, as this series moves forward, each new issue delivers a unique flavor and new look on the team and their surrounding mythos. While advertised for adults, this chapter is new reader-friendly, as the writers use Clark to fill in the gaps for fans. After such a spectacular issue, Cloonan, Conrad, and Bonvillain would be remiss if they were not to return again.
