What's The Furthest Place From Here? #6

The Academy is judged by the Carnival in What’s The Furthest Place From Here? #6, by writer Matthew Rosenberg, artist Tyler Boss, and letterer Hassan Otsame-Elhaou. This issue ends the first story arc in an epic fashion while building what’s to come.

This issue is a big climactic ending, so synopsizing it beyond the Academy is judged, and deals with the consequences of their action would be way too spoiler-y. Suffice it to say, they react to things in their own special way, setting up multiple plot lines for the future.

WTFPFH continues to be one of the most fun reads on the shelf. Rosenberg knows exactly how to play this story, combining the foolishness of teenagers in power with a mysterious flair that has carried it along for the last six issues. Each issue gives readers more answers about the world in the vaguest way possible, keeping them guessing what will come next. It often feels like dream logic, something that completely makes sense concerning a world like this one.

For example, the Carnival is the House's way of judging those who break the law, paying off the unsettling nature of the whole thing. This issue uses that judgment to throw multiple curveballs at readers, destroying the Academy as they’ve come to know it in every way possible. Rosenberg sets up a lot for the future in this issue, and one of the best parts about the whole thing is the paucity of answers. Readers know a little more than they did, but it’s more tantalizing than anything else, stringing them along and leaving the desire for more.

Boss is, well, the Boss. The art in this book has always played a huge role in the success of the storylines, and this issue is no different. If anything, Boss’s linework is better in this issue than anyone that’s come before, which is saying something. There’s a lot to take in with this issue’s art, and it pays off to flip through the pages after reading it to get a handle on just how great Boss’s pencils and colors really are.

What’s The Furthest Place From Here? #6 is a perfect way to end this first story arc. Rosenberg and Boss gel beautifully, giving readers a wonderfully constructed ending that opens up this opaque world and keeps enough mystery to tempt readers into coming back.
