Justice League #16 // Review
Revelations and retcons aplenty come into the forefront with Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Stephen Segovia, and Jim Cheung teaming up yet again to change the history of the DC Universe. Painting beautiful struggles of the past within an intertwining tale, J’onn and Kendra face down their lives and deliver an epic juxtaposition in this new chapter. This run continues to push the envelope and the title as a whole to sights unseen as the greater plot lines begin to take center stage.
With Martian Manhunter learning of the DC Universe’s secret origin, as well as mysteries of his own past coming into play, Kendra is left to fight against the Thanagarian Army and Katar Hol, the Savage Hawkman, on her own. As the Green Lantern Corps attempt to reign John Stewart in, The Trinity accompanied by a revitalized Starman, displaying far more of his potential than previously seen, arrive just in time to save the rest of the League.
Bookending the chapter, Jim Cheung pencils a few of the first and last pages while Segovia carries the remainder of the issue.
Cheung’s signature style delivers a cinematic feeling, truly matching and elevating the epic scale of the series. Cheung brings Starman into the battle in glorious fashion while Tomeu Morey paints each page with lavish color work. With Segovia left to handle the remainder of the issue, with his kinetic fight scenes delivering the fast pace action weaved throughout this chapter. Bringing an overall vibrance to battle on Thanagar Prime, Will Quintana leaves Segovia’s pencils completely dripping with beautiful hues of color.
Another testament of this series, Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV ability to work together on scripts, creating an indistinguishable voice between both writers. Dual writing detail continues to be incredibly lucrative for the duo, as this arc comes to an end although the implications are to be felt from here on out. Snyder and Tynion continue to work in a League of their own, creating new corners to play within the DCU as they script an epic tale for the ages.
Expanding upon the already grandiose DC Universe as a whole is just old hat for this creative team. With the next few issues dealing within the ramifications of this issue still to come, the secrets have only begun to come into the light as Synder and team promise huge revelations for this run and the DC Universe. Standing strong as the flagship title from DC Comics, Justice League is an absolute must read title.
