The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #15 // Review
After sustaining severe injuries in an attack during a Champions mission, Kamala is finally returning to school and facing the new realities of Kamala’s Law head-on. But as the face of the movement against her secret identity, Kamala is going to have to tread carefully. The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #15 is written by Saladin Ahmed, drawn by Minkyu Jung, inked by Juan Vlasco, colored by Ian Herring, and lettered by VC’s Joe Caramagna.
Not all of Kamala’s friends are on her side; some support Kamala’s Law, causing tension in her personal life. And with C.R.A.D.L.E. agents, led by Dum Dum Dugan, hunting for Ms. Marvel, she’s got to be extremely careful if she wants to keep saving people. Because if she goes down, the rest of the Champions could be soon to follow.
Ahmed has continually done a phenomenal job of writing both aspects of Kamala’s life; her life as a “typical teenager” and her life as a superhero. And this contrast that’s been created feels more noticeable now that both parts of her life overlap in unforeseen ways.
There are two distinct moods in The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #15, and the art visually conveys this. When Kamala is heading to school, the tone is warmer and brighter for the first time since the attack and her subsequent hospitalization. It’s like she’s anxious but still hopeful that her friends will all be on her side, and everything will work out.
But everything shifts when she realizes that this law will affect her not only as a superhero but as a regular civilian as well. After this, and for the duration of the story, the colors become darker, and it starts to rain. This shift helps show how the stakes have risen for Kamala: she can’t afford to let her guard down for a moment.
The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #15 is a solid continuation of where issue #14 left off, and of the “Outlawed” story as a whole. This is by far the most dangerous experience Kamala has gone through in her current run, and hopefully, this will continue to help her grow as a character.
