Godzilla vs MMPR #3 // Review
When a dimension-hopping Rita Repulsa drags the Green Ranger into a parallel universe, the rest of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers dive in after. Angel Grove is devastated, and the culprit is… Godzilla!
Issue 3 of Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comes to us from Boom Studios and IDW Publishing. Cullen Bunn wrote the story, while Freddie Williams II provides the art. Andrew Dalhouse colored the pages, while Johanna Nattalie lettered the book.
Resuming the story in the middle of a massive melee, the Megazord is in deep trouble. Fan-favorite kaiju Gigan, and Rita Repulsa monsters Eye Guy and Rhinoblaster are beating the rangers in a three-on-one battle. The Megazord is still badly damaged from their earlier fight with Godzilla, but things go from bad to worse when Godzilla throws himself into the fight and starts taking on everyone. Can the Rangers survive, much less hold their own?
This comic is the delightful dream of a child playing in a sandbox with their big plastic toys, and that’s a fantastic thing. Godzilla is not a subtle franchise, and Power Rangers is perfectly suited for a giant monster smash-em-up. This does mean that one-on-one fights and deeper character moments are less likely to be found… but let’s be honest:
Who watches Godzilla movies for human character development?
The star of this issue is Freddie Williams II, whose pen and pencils ooze across the page, a work of love with almost any page capable of being turned into a poster. The Megazord tanks damage like a champ, but each piece of damage can still be seen as the Rangers try their best to survive. Cullen Bunn also knows his stuff, though, and his writing shines Rita trying her best to upstage the Rangers and Godzilla with her sheer campy evilness.
Special praise also has to go to the person who chose to put the dialogue balloons for the Rangers in the color of the Power Ranger speaking. It makes things way easier to follow, and adds for more dynamic pages.
This is not going to be some deep introspection, or examination of the nature of power and the metaphor of nuclear power. It’s Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. You’re going to get giant kaiju and robots beating up each other.
And it is a delight.
