Wonder Woman #37 // Review
Trinity and Steve have just left the underworld. Literally. He's just been dead. That sort of thing would be pretty exhausting to anybody. She's just saved him from the realm of the dead. That's got to be even more exhausting. However, the real challenge awaits as they arrive on the shores of a very specific island at a very specific time in Wonder Woman #37. Writer Tom King continues a considerably long run on the title in an issue that is brought to page and panel by artist Daniel Sampere and colorst Tomeu Morey. The slightly lame arch-villain know as The Matriarch gets a bit more interesting in a continuation of The Wonder War storyline.
The island that Steve and Trinity have arrived on is Themyscira. As it is the case that Trinity is the daughter of Wonder Woman, one might expect kind of a warm welcome on the island of the Amazons. They HAVE, however, arrived on the island in a year in which Trinity was only a baby. So sheβs naturally going to come across as being quite suspicious. And thereβs naturally going to be combat between the Amazons. Itβs okay, though: Triniy have been trained by one of the fiercest warriors Themyscira has ever known: sheβs been trained by her mother.
Kingβs heart and humor are the best part of his writing. They are on clear display in an issue that finds Diana meeting Steve the first time since his death and Diana meeting her adult dayghter. Itβs also a lot of fun to wathc King direct the flow of traffic between a cast of character who are all at least one step out of time as tey meet each other and themselves at odd angles of plans, schemes chances and circumstances. Itβs a promising opening to Act II of The Wonder War.
Samoee finds quite a few opportunities to deliver striking symmetry and panels that don't necessarily need a whole lot of context. The overall atmosphere of.Themyscira might not necessarily be as beautiful or immersive as it could be, but the central focus here are just a few characters. And the artist does allow himself quite a few tight close-ups on these characters. This give Sampee the opportunity to work with some very sophisticated characterization. This is really cool because.Sampere it is easily one of the best artist with respect to shuttle characterization working in mainstream comics today. It's really fun to watch him work.
Kingβs plot has been long and winding. The overarching story that's taken so long to reach this particular point has been spotty at best. There are occasional issues that feel very weak and occasional treatments of classic ideas that also feel very weak. However, the overall story that King is jamming into place begins to feel like a little bit more of an accomplishment with each issue. It hasn't exactly been a graceful journey. However, it does begin to feel like.King is going to be able to tell a compelling story featuring Wonder Woman that continues t hrough her 85th birthday next month.
